Amidst the turbulent times of 1920s Shanghai, Shion, a student engrossed in reading the newspaper, is approached by a woman. Her name is Shiulang, the wife of a military commander; she asks the well-educated Shion to write a letter on her behalf.
Through exchanged words, the two are drawn to each other despite occasional clashes. Yet, a reality that promises no future together and inevitable changes of the times painfully tears their feelings apart.
